Glengala Gazette – Issue #41

THANK YOU to everyone in our community who has supported us throughout 2019. The school has had another big year with many events, amazing reading growth, opening of our brand new F-2 Learning Space! We couldn’t do it without the support of our wonderful staff and parent community.

2020 is shaping up to be another sensational year at Glengala PS. We have a passionate, knowledgeable and dedicated team of staff on board to continue to move our school into 21st century teaching and learning approaches.

We wish our Year 6 students all the very best for the next stage in their education. We know they are now equipped with many skills and attitudes that will stand them in good stead to meet the challenges associated with moving to secondary school.

 Farewells

At the end of the year we have a few staff who will be leaving us. We say farewell to Alex Firth who has decided to travel and work overseas in 2020. We also farewell Ling Parente from our Office Admin team. We thank each of them for their contribution to our school over 2019.

As announced earlier in the term, we will be saying a sad farewell to one of our Assistant Principals, Samantha Cunningham tomorrow. Sam has provided our school with high level educational leadership and student welfare over the past five years. On behalf of students, staff and parents, I would like to thank Sam for her support and growth of our students and staff and the significant support she has provided me over the last 5 years and wish her all the best for the next step in her career.

Start of 2020

Our school office will reopen on Tuesday 28th of January from 9am – 4pm. The office will be open for enquiries, uniform sales and school tours. As we start our school year with two curriculum days, students in Year 1-6 will start school on Thursday 30th of January and our Foundation students starting on Thursday 6th of February.

School Security

We seek your assistance in discouraging any people who may misuse our grounds over the holidays. If you happen to notice any person on our school grounds that are engaging in any type of dangerous, destructive or antisocial behaviour please do not hesitate to call the police on 000.

We hope that everyone in our community has a safe and happy holiday break with their families and we look forward to seeing you in 2020.

The resources will be catalogued and circulated into Learning Spaces in time for the beginning of the 2020 school year.

Staff and students in the F-2 Learning Spaces have now moved into their new rooms within the new north building. Book Fair & Buy the School a Book Thank You

Huge thanks to the many families who supported our Dino-Mite Book Fair last week. We had a terrific turnout at every session with almost $935 raised for our school.  Also pleasing was a number of families who supported our ‘Buy the School a Book’ fundraiser.  This allowed families to select and purchase a book from book fair to be donated to our school Library. Books will be processed and available for borrowing shortly.  You will be able to easily identify books purchased through this program by the handprint thank you message on the inside cover.  Thank you to Geraldine and her team of helpers Claire, Diana, Keith, Milly, Rania and Vin for organising another great book fair for our community.

Carols Evening – 16th December

Come along and join us for our last and often biggest whole school event for the year – our Carols Evening.  Bring your rug & small beach chairs along with your singing voices and enjoy a lovely low-key end of year celebration with the school community.  A variety of food and drinks along with some Christmas gifts will be on sale from 5pm with Carols commencing at 6pm.  We will also draw the winners of our Christmas Hampers raffles on the night.

Co-Teaching

We’re proud to operate in a true co-teaching model at Glengala PS. Since the introduction of this teaching model, we have seen positive outcomes for students and staff. Each co-teaching Learning Space will generally have an average of three educators responsible for teaching & learning as well as student welfare.  This model also allows students to connect with a variety of educators. Co-teaching allows us to provide additional support to our students and leads to greater outcomes for students as it increases opportunities for small group and one-to-one learning, and stronger explicit teaching and modelling during lessons.  The planning process encourages teachers to bounce ideas off each other in order to deliver the strongest, most engaging and creative lessons.  It also naturally allows for feedback and reflection of teacher practice – one of the best ways to continue to improve our effectiveness.  If you would like to see co-teaching in action, please chat with one of our Team Leaders – Elise (F-2), Richard (3-6) or Kate (Specialist) to arrange a suitable time to visit.

NAPLAN Success

We would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the wonderful work of our students and staff in preparing and undertaking NAPLAN back in May.  This year we have had some wonderful news and success to share.  We continue with our upward trend for growth and improvement in Reading.   Our students continue to grow between year 3 and year 5, in Reading at rates above the state means.   This is such wonderful news to share.  We pride ourselves on not emphasising the stress of NAPLAN for the students; putting it into perspective, it is one tool the education system use to track school improvement over time, and that is how we like to use it.  This is why we celebrate when we can see the work and care our staff put into supporting and growing our students as individuals and life long learners.

COMPASS  – Time to request a printed copy of end of year report
